There is more feeling now that cancer in the prostate should be treated similarly to breast cancer, that is, instead of treating the prostate as a whole, to target the cancerous cells.
Below are details of 3 new treatments, High Frequency Ultra Sound (HIFU), Cryotherapy and Photodynamic Therapy.
As with all these treatments, talk to your surgeon about which is the best for you, and don’t forget, find out as much as you can about them, speak to other men who have undergone these procedures if you can, and remember it’s your body, so don’t be bullied, take your time, and do what is suitable for you and your family.
High-Frequency Ultrasound (HIFU)
HIFU is a relatively new way to treat cancer and is a non-invasive treatment that minimises side effects and preserves patient quality of life.
Photodynamic Therapy
Photodynamic therapy uses light and has been used to treat other forms of cancer, mainly in the head and neck.
Cryotherapy
Cryotherapy uses freezing probes to kill the cancerous cells within the prostate.
